#EatingVeganAt Fast Food Joints for Breakfast!

Hello, Donnas!

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day, it can also be the most delicious! I love food too much to pick on meal over another so I don’t have a favorite meal but I can truthfully say that I love breakfast food. What I love more about it is that it’s been the most simply meal to modify since going vegan. That being said, if you want to see what it’s like eating vegan meals, inch yourself into going vegan or just want to make an environmental impacts by doing something like meatless Monday’s, I think it’s a lot less stressful to adapt your breakfasts everyday than struggle to come up with new meals for lunch and dinner every week.

You can do small things like change to almond, coconut or soy milk and buy vegan varieties of cereal (like Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch or Kashi Organic Strawberry Fields- my two personal favorites. This link has many options!). This is such an easy alternative and you may realize that your favorite cereal is vegan! If you eat eggs for breakfast every day, try a tofu scramble recipe instead! I can’t vouch for tofu scramble because I’ve never been an egg fan and therefore have never made tofu scramble… but I’ve heard a lot of people say great things about it!

My go-to at home breakfast is oatmeal with 1/2 almond milk and 1/2 water and I mix in 2 tbsp of almond butter and fresh blueberries. I have eaten this almost every day for about a month and I have nothing but great things to say about it! I use 2 pouches of oatmeal and it keeps me full for hours!

Of course we all have busy schedules and breakfast at home isn’t always an option. That’s why I decided to share my go to breakfasts at my most visited fast food restaurants are!

McDonald’s

McDonald’s is probably the least vegan friendly joint out there, BUT you can definitely make it work! Although the hash browns are off the table, you can still eat a delicious and filling meal. Usually, I go for one or the other but the morning I ordered this, I was really hungry and went for both the bagel and oatmeal… and I still had a hard time eating both!

So when you’re ordering oatmeal at McDonald’s, you just order it without cream. It comes with sliced apples and a cranberry/raisin mix. You could opt out of those toppings as well if you don’t like them, but I think it’s delicious!

For the bagel, I just order a bagel toasted and say “with nothing on it” to ensure they don’t add butter. I then ask for jam or jelly at the window where you get your food (if you ask for it when ordering at the drive thru, they’ll tell you to ask at the window. Words of wisdom from experience haha.) Both the strawberry preserves and grape jelly are vegan, so if you’re extra like me, ask for one of each and you can enjoy a little extra variety.

I used to love bagels with cream cheese for breakfast, but I learned that I actually like bagels with jam better! Try it! You may love it like me! Like I said before, this is an easy way for you to modify your current breakfast choices to make them vegan!

McDonald’s also has different size options for OJ unlike many places, which is awesome! I get a medium when I feel a cold coming on for some extra vitamin C but I honestly usually just drink water every meal.

Speaking of being sick, is anyone else struggling through allergies right now?! I have never had an allergy issue but this year it’s hitting me hard! I think this covers pretty much every vegan breakfast option at McDonald’s so I essentially had the Vegan breakfast of a king at McDonald’s that day. If you want something else, I think you may be able to score some apple slices in the morning. Sorry… I digress.

The only downside about these options is that your location may not include these options as a part of the all day breakfast. I know the offerings vary by location and I’m pretty sure I ordered this after breakfast hours so you can always try! If they do, you have extra options for lunch or a snack when you’re on the go and McDonald’s is your only option!

Burger King

Burger King has become my absolute favorite fast food place for vegan breakfast! It was a gift from heaven when I learned that BK’s French toast sticks are vegan. Delicious is an understatement and although they aren’t the healthiest option, this is my treat breakfast when I am on the road. The syrup is also vegan, so dunk away. I have to admit, my mouth is watering as I write this and I wish I had some of these in front of me right now.

Good news! The hash browns at BK are vegan so eat your grease loving heart out 😂. I am not a huge fast food hash brown lover but I really like BK’s hash browns! Oh and ketchup to dip them in is a must have to don’t forget to ask for some at the window or you’ll be frantically digging through your glove compartment hoping that past you was looking out for present you… we’ve all been there. Oh… and BK sets you up by giving you the option of hash brown sizes. I got a large trying to be greedy and they give you SO. MANY. HASH BROWNS. I was a little ashamed by how many I ate but truly I didn’t regret one second of it. Take my advice and order a medium if you want a good sized hash browns.

Sad face for BK’s Orange juice because they only carry one size, although I think it’s the perfect amount to wash all this down.

Like I said, BK is my current fave for vegan breakfast and it’s so easy to order! You will be eating it and feel like you’re treating yourself, not depriving yourself and your not hurting any animals or the environment in the process!

Dunkin’ Donuts

DD surprisingly is also very accommodating for vegan diners. My go to link for ensuring what I’m ordering is vegan is this link from PETA, which I’m using as a source for some of the info below.

You can your coffee, latte, peppermint mocha latte, espresso or tea and make it vegan by adding almond milk instead of cream/milk. You can spice up your drink and order the following flavor shots to your beverage: blueberry, caramel, cinnamon, hazelnut, mocha, peppermint, raspberry and toasted almond.

The following Coolatta drinks are also vegan: Arnold Palmer, mango, passion fruit, Minute Maid Orange and strawberry. These are so refreshing in the summer- the strawberry is my favorite.

Many bakery items are vegan. The vegan bagels are cinnamon raisin, cinnamon raisin bagel twist, everything, garlic, onion, plain, poppyseed, salt and sesame. The English muffin, pretzel twist and French roll are also vegan.

I ordered the iced coffee with almond milk and blueberry flavor shot. I didn’t add any sugar and I thought it was really good. I usually put little to no sugar in my coffee so the blueberry flavor gave just the right amount of sweetness for me. Although the shots are unsweetened, the blueberry one has a natural sweetness to it. I usually go for the blueberry so I’m not sure about the rest.

I also ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel and applied the same method as I did at McDonald’s by adding strawberry and grape jam to my bagel. I really liked the fruity taste of the cinnamon raisin bagel with the jelly and definitely recommend it! Also, I don’t remember DD bagels being so good but that bagel was extraordinarily delicious. It was like bakery level good.

Yay! The hash browns at DD are also vegan. I’m usually not a fan of the seasoning that DD has on their hash browns but today they were actually really good and crispy! I have gotten them before and they were soggy so I think I may have just tried them on a bad day. I think they are worth the try though!! I think they only offer one size (don’t quote me) so you may want to order two if you’re a real potato lover.

This is yet again another good breakfast option when you’re on the go. What I like about DD is how customizable your breakfast can be! There are so many drink and bagel options which makes it feel like you aren’t pigeonholed into one or two options.

I hope this post helped you realize that eating on the road doesn’t have to be stressful when you’re vegan and also that a vegan diet isn’t a restrictive one! These three options will fill you up and leave you feeling satisfied! Let me know if you try any of them out and also tag me in photos on Instagram (@midtowndonna) and use hashtag #diningdonnas when you show off your vegan fast food breakfast photos!!

In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

Until next time,

Chelsea
