#EatingVeganAt McDonalds?!

Hello, Donnas!

Since going vegan, I learned that it can be hard to create a meal at certain restaurants and fast food spots. McDonalds is probably the least vegan friendly fast food restaurant but sometimes you end up with that being your only option and I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be as stressful or as boring as you think!

About a year ago McDonald’s introduced their signature crafted sandwiches. These newer offerings make it a whole lot yummier and easier to create your own sandwich at McDonald’s packed full of delicious ingredients.

Today I ordered the Pico Guacamole Artisan Grilled Chicken without the chicken, cheese and buttermilk ranch sauce. What’s left? Well there is an artisan roll with guacamole, pico de gallo and lettuce which are all vegan. They are also supposed to give you a lime to squeeze over it as well but they left mine out. This sandwich was surprisingly delicious and a great option when you’re on the go, desperate and don’t want a salad.

Although I didn’t ask for any extras, you could ask for any of these extra ingredients added to your sandwich that are also vegan:

SWEET ONION BBQ SAUCE

Ingredients: Water, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Tomato Paste, Distilled Vinegar, Onions, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Contains 2% Or Less; Chili Pepper, Soybean Oil, Onion Powder, Mustard Seed, Natural Flavor, Sodium Benzoate And Potassium Sorbate (Preservatives), Xanthan Gum, Spices, Citric Acid, Turmeric, Paprika, Garlic Powder.

ONION REDUCTION SAUCE (basically sautéed onions)

Ingredients: Slivered Onions.

Prepared in Onion Reduction Sauce (Palm, Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oil, Salt, Sugar, Caramelized Sugar, Onion Powder, Natural Flavors, Spice).

CRISPY ONIONS

Ingredients: Onions, Enriched Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Sunflower, Safflower and/or Canola Oil, Salt.

Contains: WHEAT.

PICO DE GALLO

Ingredients: Tomatoes, Onions, Dried Parsley, Salt, Maltodextrin, Sugar, Modified Corn Starch, Lime Juice Concentrate, Corn Syrup Solids, Vinegar, Spices, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Natural Flavors.

GUACAMOLE

Ingredients: Avocado, Tomato, Onion, Jalapeno Peppers, Serrano Peppers, Salt, Cilantro, Garlic.

TOMATO

ONIONS

PICKLES

From southwest salad:

SOUTHWEST VEGETABLE BLEND

Ingredients: Roasted Corn, Black Beans, Roasted Tomato, Poblano Pepper, Lime Juice (Water, Lime Juice Concentrate, Lime Oil), Cilantro.

I’m definitely going to ask for the southwest vegetable blend on my sandwich next time to see if they can add it. I didn’t ask for it this time so I’m not 100% positive that they can but it’s definitely worth a shot! It would be a great addition for a little bit of protein! Plus, it definitely goes with the southwest vibe of the sandwich! I’d also ask them to add pickle and the onion reduction sauce from the other signature sandwich. There is some onion in the pico but I have a weakness for sautĂ©ed onions. With all of these additions, the sandwich would definitely be one of a kind and filling!!

Since I ate this at home, I decided to add some ketchup and sliced cucumber (due to the lack of crunch from a pickle). You could do this too if you are taking your food home or add anything else you have in your fridge. I loved the freshness of this sandwich! I had very low expectations for vegan options at McDonald’s since the fries even include animal products. I was pleasantly surprised by the options I had and will definitely explore my options a little more adding more ingredients the next time I find myself at a McDonald’s!

I’m also excited to share that McDonald’s Apple pies are vegan. I know they aren’t the best for you with all of the added chemicals and ingredients you can’t pronounce but I have a weakness for them so I splurge on one every once and a while! I definitely wouldn’t recommend getting one every time you’re at a McDonald’s but I just wanted to let you know that they’re an option!

This meal was delicious and satisfying. Although I wish they offered vegan fries, it was still delicious without them!

I have some other interesting news regarding McDonald’s vegan offerings. They introduced a vegan patty called the “McVegan” to their Finland and Sweden menus on December 28th. I read an article that the patty is doing better than McDonald’s estimated in Finland and as they estimated in Sweden. Although they have not made any announcements that they plan on bringing the patty to their U.S. stores, the good news about its success could mean that it’s possible in the future that we could have a substantial vegan option at McDonald’s!!

I hope you enjoyed reading this post and it helped you learn more about the vegan options available at fast food restaurants! If you would like me to write about vegan options at another restaurant or fast food location, let me know in the comments and I would love to help you out!

In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

Until next time,

Chelsea

    1. I totally agree! And although they haven’t come as far as they can in the US offering vegan fries or a vegan patty, it’s still good to know that we can make it work on a vegan diet! Thank you so much for reading!! XO
